How to cut your AWS bill without slowing your product
Most cloud bills do not fail because the architecture is wrong. They drift. A forgotten environment, an oversized database, a log bucket growing for two years. The fixes are usually safe and often boring, and they are found by looking rather than by re-architecting.
Find where the money actually goes
Start from a breakdown by service and by tag, not from a gut feeling. The largest line is rarely the one people assume. Look for the top few services, then the top few resources inside them. In most accounts a small number of resources carry the majority of the cost.
The safe first fixes
Before touching anything architectural, take the free money.
- Delete idle and orphaned resources: unattached volumes, old snapshots, unused load balancers and elastic IPs.
- Right-size over-provisioned instances and databases that run far below their capacity.
- Move cold storage to cheaper tiers and set lifecycle rules so it stops growing forever.
- Turn off non-production environments outside working hours.
- Review data transfer and egress, which quietly compounds.
Commitments, carefully
Once the baseline is clean, commitment discounts (savings plans or reserved capacity) can cut steady-state compute cost substantially. The discipline is to commit only to the usage you are confident about, after you have removed the waste, not before. Committing to an inflated baseline locks in the waste.
Make it not come back
Cost drifts back without guardrails. Set budgets and alerts, tag everything so ownership is obvious, and put a monthly review in the calendar. The goal is not a one-off cleanup but a bill that stays predictable as you grow.
The takeaway
An audit finds the waste; right-sizing and commitments capture the savings; guardrails stop the drift. Do the audit first, because committing before you clean simply locks in the problem.
